Whether you are stepping onto this path for the very first time, or navigating the closing chapters of a decades-long journey, this time of year invites us to pause, dream and ask a fundamental question:
What could this year look like for our family if we built it around our unique values and interests?

If you are brand new to home education this term, welcome.
Perhaps this is an intentional, joyful leap into the unknown. Or perhaps this decision has effectively been made for you, forced by school refusal, burnout, or a system that simply could not meet your child’s special educational needs. If you are arriving here carrying stress, doubt, or the exhaustion of advocating for your child, take a deep breath.
Home education is not about replicating a school classroom at the kitchen table. It is an invitation to discover that there are countless valid pathways to learning. You now have the freedom to design an environment uniquely suited to your child’s rhythm, passions and sensory needs.
Taking this road less travelled does not mean walking it alone. Seek out in-real-life connections. Look for local home education meet-ups, park days and community groups. Finding even one or two families nearby to connect with can transform your experience, turning apprehension into shared encouragement.
For those who have been home educating for a few years, this new term brings a different kind of transition. Our children grow, their needs evolve, and the approaches that worked seamlessly two years ago might now require a shift.
It can be tempting to look sideways at what other families are doing or to let expectations from the school system creep back in. Instead, trust the process. Centre your focus entirely on the unique young person standing in front of you.
When you feel the need to level up or adjust your offering, lean on your local network and talk to people slightly further down the line. Embrace the changing dynamics that your growing children demand. Their emerging independence is a sign that the process is working.
Have conversations with them about their changing needs, and what adaptations might be needed.
Building local, in-person relationships takes time, and sometimes you need direct wisdom from someone who has already navigated similar challenges to those you face today.

After many years of immense personal investment, watching the home education chapter gently draw to a close brings a complex mix of reflection and pride.
Having home educated my four sons over the past 16+ years, with my older boys now fully grown, working, buying homes and stepping into adulthood without ever having been schooled, I can tell you confidently that children can live, learn, thrive and step confidently into adult life without traditional schooling.
There is immense freedom in realising that the standard conveyor belt is not the only route to a fulfilled, successful life.
