John is a lifelong educator, which at 42 means there is plenty of time to become the professional football coach, astronaut or groundbreaking chef…
John started out in UK schools, however has taught in International Schools in Malawi, Switzerland and the USA.
His expertise is in supporting confidence and empowering young people to build positive habits and engage their curiosity. This is holistic work: academic growth is important; reading and engagement with the world is essential, as is music, drawing, relationship-building, walking in the woods, conversation, making fantastic healthy food, sports and all the rest. Goal setting and reflection are used within a ‘no negativity’ space.
Together inquire – how did we get here? Would we like to do it differently going forward? And, how can we do that? It may seem a simple approach. It is purposefully so, to enable families and young people to dig deeper and drive their own journey. As a secondary school leader and educator for 20 years, John was (and still is) a vocal and active supporter of inclusion and student-centered learning. Although he initially had a bias against the idea of home education, this was a systematic assumption, which, over time, has changed. One of the big reasons for this, is that John saw the challenges that are evident in the school system for all young people, but especially those with learning challenges or social difficulties. A further reason has been working directly with home educated students and their parents since 2021. He is hugely motivated to support young people in building a fantastic future for themselves and loves seeing their growth as people within their communities.
John has been an educational leader in International Baccalaureate programming and an educator in International and UK curriculum for 20 years. He has recent experience in online learning and in building communities.
John leads an organisation “Discovery Outdoors” which brings learning outside. He is a geographer, historian and expert in supporting research and writing for young people. Although John does not consider himself to be a “math guy” (or physics for that matter) he is able to support self-management and learning discovery in all academic areas. John also coaches parents and has extensive experience in supporting parents to navigate the learning journey with their children based on his many years of experience as a secondary school leader supporting families with Post -16 planning and decision making.
